Yes, as long as it is real butter. I almost always do, I prefer it. Just make sure it is unsalted butter, otherwise the cookies will come out salty. If all you have is salted butter, you can just omit some of the salt in the recipe and they should be ok. Personally I won't buy salted butter, you can always add salt.
I saw comments about the cookies being hard and flat, I have never noticed this really being an issue, If you don't overbake them they wont be hard. I hate crunchy cookies, they have to be soft and chewy.

You can, but I personally would not suggest it. Have you tried those Crisco Sticks? They are all I use now when I make cookies and they turn out so yummy. The amount to substitute and information is included in the package, but get the butter Crisco Sticks, again they are awesome. Hope this helps and hope your cookies turn out ok, good-luck!!

absolutely it taste much better and gives richer flavor
Conversion factor:
8 tbs butter=8 tbs shortening + 8tbs water
OR
6 tbs butter=6 tbs shortening + 6tbs water Etc etc Enjoy!!

you can, but it will change the consistency of the cookie. butter = flat & crisp; shortening = fluffy & soft.
