I have a 1 yr. old Great Pyrenees, she just had a litter of pups a couple months ago so now she isn't nursing anymore and is back to her normal playful self. Problem is she is shedding like crazy! I know this breed sheds alot...i've dealt with that but she is shedding in clumps of hair....I mean it falls out by the roots.....big fur balls clung together by roots everywhere! She is also going bald in some spots on her back thighs which is where most of the shedding is occuring. When I brush her I have to clean a big ball of hair after each stroke of the brush..it is that bad. Can someone please tell me why this is happening and what it is and what to do!
None of my other pets have this. Thanks a bunch!

I agree with W, about the stress issue. I'm guessing that it was a large litter and she is just spent. Her hormones are all out of whack and she is adjusting. If you are really concerned about it call your Vet.

As a groomer I have groomed a few GP and the brushing is a chore. One dog was so matted that I had no choice but to shave her down. I started at the back of her head and worked my way to her butt and was going to shave her butt under her tail and all of a sudden maggots just poured out of her. There must have been 2 or 3 cups of them. Yep, full of poop too. I stopped and called the owner and told them that I was going to have to raise my price and ask them to come see why.

Needless to say the got really grossed out and you could see how ashamed they were to allow this to happen.

I got her all cleaned up, finished stripping her but there was a lot of raw flesh that the maggots were feeding on.

I don't know what happened to her cause they never brought her back to me.

Just brush and brush and brush, this gets rid of the dead hair and stimulates her skin to start putting her coat back on.

Good luck, GP are great dogs.

it sounds like either mange or an allergy. if its mange cow wormer (ivomec) will treat it more than likely but you only give them very little, your vet can tell you the amount per weight of your dog. For skin allergies she's probably gonna need a steriod shot.

Sounds like mange but I don't know all the details to know if she could have gotten it. It could also be hormones from stopping nursing. Take her to the vet to get her looked at.

It sounds as if the pregnancy stressed your young dogs immune system. These symptons can be a sign of several conditions....mange,low thyroid, hormonal imbalance or just blowing a coat. Please let your vet examine your dog for a proper diagnosis.

Could be a vitamin deficiency, an allergy or mange... a disease where dogs lose their hair.

Take her to the vet!
