We die when God's purpose in our lives is fulfilled and not a moment sooner.

That it is only a saying and nothing more. If you want to analyze it, you could say that good people are more gullible and vulnerable to evil things in life and are too accepting of people, even bad people, so they get into situations which are harmful to them and do not know how to get out without keeping their own goodness in tact. You could reason that evil people live longer because they handle controversy and tight situations with strength, bullheadedness, and have a sense of being 'invincible'. Therefore they can handle and get out of just about every situation. In the end, it's just a saying. Plenty of "bad" young people die because they live on the edge and ignore good advice.
PS FOLKS - It was a saying LONG BEFORE Joel sang about it.

My opinion is that if you really think about it, you see an awful lot of people who are really good natured people who love live and have a promising future, die in tragic accidents or what have you. So if you think of it in a philosophical-meaning behind the words way, then it makes sense...sadly

You could always blame Billy Joel. He named a song after the phrase

Well I think that it was just a catch frase that happened to stick around a lot longer than expected..... However if you think about it the younger you die the less likely it is that you have done as many horrible things in your life. A small child is VERY unlikely to have an affair or kill someone where as and adult is more likely to commit such crimes but all in all i think we are just over think a frase that wasn't meant to relay mean a whole lot of anything

"Only the good die young" is a completely absurd statement, unles you are of the opinion that children cannot be "bad" people due to the fact that they are not old enough to understand right and wrong and/or the consequences of their actions. I don't believe that. Plus, if I did, I think a better statement would be that all of the young are good, and some of them die.

A) Since they died young, how does anyone know whether or not they'd have turned out good?

B) Since good as well as bad people frequently live to a ripe old age, what has the saying to do with reality?

C) In essence, it is sense-free, does not compute. Might be halfway decent poetry, but it's lousy logic!

It's false. A lot of gangmembers and murderers died before reaching 15 years old.
