REALLY CHEAP, REALLY FAST, MINIMAL CLEANUP, tasty recipe found at web page listed below (i copied and pasted recipe from that site - there's others that are pretty good too)

Barley Chicken casserole

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup onion, chopped

3/4 cup carrots, chopped

1/2 cup pearl barley

1 1/2 teaspoons chicken bouillon

1 teaspoon oregano, dried and crushed

1/2 teaspoon cumin, ground

1/2 teaspoon black pepper, ground

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 tablespoons olives and/or capers

1 cup water

4 chicken pieces, 1 1/2 pounds total (I prefer thighs & drumsticks)

2 tablespoons cilantro, minced

1 jalapeno, minced or crushed red pepper (optional)

1 packet sazon

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a medium saucepan combine onion, cumin, pepper, oregano, olives, carrots, water, barley, bouillon, and garlic. Bring to boil.
Pour hot mixture into a 2 quart casserole dish. Mix in cilantro and jalapeno.

Arrange chicken pieces on top of mixture. Sprinkle with sazon.
Bake covered for one hour or until barley and chicken are tender. (I like to leave uncovered for an extra 15 minutes so the skins can get a little more color and a little more crunchy)

Serve with a salad.

I've had some trouble finding the site on a search engine so you can just type the name straight into your address bar but leave out the www

Stews are probably the cheapest thing, because you can make a big pot and have enoguh for a while family, with leftovers. Plus, you can buy cheaper pieces of chicken or beef, since in a stew they will simmer and get softer and tender.

Jacket potatoes, toppings like baked beans or cheese or tinned tuna are very cheap.

Pasta, make a healthy cheap sauce with tinned toms, onion, maybe chop some ham up and chuck it in.
