My dad is trying to trace someone with the surname McGowan, that's all he knows about him, that plus an estimated DOB. Like I said far fetched I know!

Contact the Royal Army Museum, the Imperial War Museum and Kew records office.

There are 1199 Mcgowans (224 killed) and 30 Macgowans(7killed) who fought in WW1. Hope that has narrowed the search for you(not) Sorry!!!

you can research the unfortunate deaths at wargraves.com or just put wargraves into a search engine. I don't think you are going to get a list of everyone who fought its in the 100's of thousands if not million plus.

Needle in Haystack.....He could really do with a service number and then many WW1 soldiers were MIA as they could not ID remains....Try Mod/ British Army but he'd probally have more chance on the lottery...

that would be one BIG list, try the internet, I'm sure that's got the name of every combatant soldier and their status during the war!
