Ignore the folks saying saying, in so many words, JUNK IT.

I'm on my 4th new VW, and have had probably 6 used ones prior to that. All have been entirely problem-free and completely reliable for me, except one new one had a slight paint defect which was fixed under warranty [hardly a drivetrain quality issue].

I had an almost-new Chrysler once that had an enormous crush on the dealership's service bay - I just couldn't get it away from there for long. Huge drivetrain problems, too, not just little problems.

Look around in the Yellow Pages for some mechanic that specializes ONLY in VW repairs. He will likely take very good care of you, and can probably get you going again for about 1/3 of what it would cost elsewhere. If you can't find him in your phone book, call the nearest VW dealership, ask for the parts or service department, and then ask them if they know of a mechanic in the area that works only on VWs. They'll hook you up.

BTW - is your car automatic or manual? Some around the '98 model year were automatics that had the base Golf engine in it. If it's automatic, it will cost much more to fix than if it's a manual. Beyond that, if it's a manual, it might just need gear oil [just a few bucks] or a new clutch, prob around $300 to replace.

Good luck~

Don't sell it! Fix it! Volkswagons are great cars I my self have had 4 jetta's and 4 rabbits and my step dad has had 3 scirocco's 3 golf's, 2 passat's, 3 rabbits and 2 jetta's. And my mom has had a rabbit and a golf, so that is 23 vw's and we have only had 1 car that we couldn't fix. They aren't that bad exspencive to fix u can find a trani in a junk yard for about 250 bucks. Hell once we bought a 97 GTI out of the junk yard for 600 dollars and put a hood, fenders, radiator support and headlights and sold the car for 2,000 dollars. And the guy is still drivin the wheels of of it. So I would say fix it a trani is easy to change it takes me and my step dad 1hour to change one and have it drivin.

id say get it fixed. If you look around for a car you will not find something verygood for $2000 dollars. The GTI is a good car aswell

You will lose more money buying another car, and that might have potential problems with it that the seller has not told you about!

Get it fixed!!

It really depends on how much you like the car and if it's an auto or manual tranny. Automatic transmissions tend to act funny if they get low on fluid, so make sure you're topped off all the way. Auto trans repair will run you about $2500.

If it's a manual, it's probably worth fixing, depending on the nature of the problems you're having with it.

The problem with fixing German produced cars is that their parts are extremely expensive. A transmission for one of those models, while was highly produced, may not be worth it at that price. My mother had her transmission rebuilt (was not a VW) and it cost $700, without being professionally put in. For a VW, it is probably very expensive, especially if you're not the one to put it in.

despite you do rather no longer the VR6, they're much less sturdy and components are greater costly. you're a sprint swifter initially, yet no longer for long. And for the civic with the ls motor, $4900 is ridiculous. i'm specific you may desire to discover a civic with a b18c or b16, that are greater advantageous autos. So in case you definitely could desire to %. between those 3 vehicles, i might pick the GSR.
