The grout is only cracking around the bottom area where to tile meets the backsplash of the countertop? What would cause this to happen? The rest of the tile grout doesn't seem to be a problem. This is newly installed tile done by a contractor.

There shouldn't have been any grout where the backsplash and countertop meet. Where ever there is a corner especially with ceramic tile it's considered a stress joint and should've been filled with silicone in such areas grout will crack and in a very short period of time because of movement. Silicone is pliable and has elasticity grout doesn't.

The countertop expands and contracts and so pulls away from the grout which doesn't. To fix it, all you need to do is run a bead of silicon caulk (which does flex) all the way around - it should have been done by the contractor though.

If you live in a cold climate area you could be experienceing heaving. In the winter when the ground freezes it swealls up like water in an ice cube tray. The bottom area you talk about should be neatly caulked with a flexible silicone caulk of the appropriate color.
