Parents don't just say no because. I'm sure there is a reason and if it makes sense to them, then it is final. Get over it already.

I can see your point as you've been studying away at dogs for what seems to be a while now, but your father may have a different perspective on owning a dog. Maybe he was attacked by one when he was younger and doesn't want to tell anyone about it because it's a painful and repressed memory. Maybe he's simply allergic. Either way, talk to him about why he wouldn't want you and your family to have a dog. Don't get aggravated and upset when he says "no", just ask why. I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason behind this, especially if you've done so much research. If he uses the "travel" excuse again, tell him your perspective. Let him know you think he has a different reason for not wanting a dog, and you don't consider a vacation once or twice a year "constantly traveling". Tell him you could call a dog-sitter (and let him know they DO exist and are not expensive) for those once-in-a-blue-moon trips. Also, since you mentioned he is the one always traveling for business trips, let him know dogs are great for letting people know when danger is around. Most dogs will bark or growl when someone it doesn't know comes around and there have been many instances when dogs have gotten families out of burning buildings.
Just tell him how set you are on having a dog and be respectful when he tells you his reasoning. Don't get upset or over react if he's one of those fathers who says "because I said so!". Be mature and walk away. Good luck in getting your dream pet!

I am on your side and I am not. I cant tell how old you are but you need to think about who will be taking care of the dog, all day, all night, weekends, when you are at school. Also dogs can live for 15 to 20 years, where will you be in 15 to 20 years? The travel one is easy, tell him you will pay for the kennel for the dog while you are away - but you really have to be able to do it.
Who is going to pay for the food for the dog, wash the dog, vet trips, groomer, licensing, toys, etc?
This isn't just a Dog this is a new member of your family and you need to think of it more as a baby than a pet. It needs full time love and attention and that has to be a commitment from everyone in the household.

I think you should be able to get a dog sounds like you are really responsible. If you travel you could take the dog to a kennel or have a friend watch the dog. When I was a kid if I wanted an animal I would just get it. MY parents weren't always happy but they never made me take it back. Good Luck Sweetie!

well, i'll tell ya....had i known that the dog i got was going to live as long as he has (he turned 15 in december and shows NO signs of slowing down) i would never have gotten him.
having a dog is like having a 6 year old who can't talk or be helpful to you in anyway.
i'm not picking sides, i'm just letting you know that a dog is a responsibility that stays until he's dead and gone. you don't get a dog and enjoy him for a year or so, then tie him in the back yard and fight with everyone over whose responsibility it is to take care of him.

Well both is right. Think of it this way a dog there is alot of things to support. You have to walk the dog every morning early. You have to walk it at night. You have to feed it. If its sick you have to bring it to the vet. If it poops everywhere you MUST clean that. These things dont just happen once. They happen often. And dog hair will be all over the place. Including your clothing of you play around with the dog.

I am 15 years old, and it sounds to me like you are whining cuz you are not getting what you want. You father I'm sure has good reasons for not getting a dog, perhaps you should settle for another animal such a parrot or a hamster, and suck it up.

Well, as long as you live under their roof, you have to follow their rules. I think you're just a whiner. Whining doesn't always work. Just be responsible and maybe your dad will see that you can take care of a dog.

Your parents may be planning a trip for the family and aren't telling you yet. Don't jump to conclusions that they're only saying no to make your life miserable.
