I don't know about your state but in mine they are regulated by the state. You can only get them from a registered vet.

Well from where I live the rabies are to be given by a vet only. You can get the rabies done by a shot clinic that comes to your local pet store. But for the boosters you can get them at your local feed store. I breed golden retrievers and I do all the shots except the rabies. I have never heard of rabies being sold to the public. I would call your vet to find out what the laws are in your area for this shot.

I have 4 cats and 3 dogs and I take them to my vet at least once a year for their annual checkups and vaccinations. When I chose to have a large number of pets, I was aware of the responsibility and the expense that this would create. If you can't afford a measly $25 per animal each year, then please find a new home for some of your animals.

Also, only a veterinarian can legally give a rabies shot. If you gave your pets their rabies vaccination and that animal then either bit a human, another animal, or was bitten by another animal, legally that vaccination you gave doesn't count. It must be given and documented properly, that's the law. Rabies is nothing to mess around about.

Because rabies shots (for dogs) are required by law in most states, they must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. The owner must also be able to prove that his dog has been vaccinated. The vet is required to give you a tag and a certificate of inoculation with the shot. This way, you can prove the animal has been vaccinated if needed.
As far as I know, the laws don't state that cats must be vaccinated, but it's probably a good idea in certain regions.

well if your vet is only going to charge you 25 bucks you should be happy. At the clinic I worked for each kitten and puppy shot ran you about 60 bucks (that includes exam puppy/kitten shots, fecal, exam). I would recommend buying them from you vet though, that way you know they have been properly stored and shipped. we sold vaccines over the counter. Each shot cost a little different. Rabies in Oklahoma HAS to be given by a vet or it is not considered current. I think the cost of ours were 8 or 9 dollars for each DHLPPC/ FVRCP vacc, 9 dollars for bordetella, 12 dollars for Lyme and 13 dollars for Rabies only (no exam) I dont remember how much the Feline Leukemia, FIV or FiP cost though. But it could be different at your vet, but if you buy them OTC from your vet you wont have to pay for shipping. Also you must refrigerate all vaccines or they become ineffective. Do not mix any vaccines that have to be reconstituted (put the liquid into powder and mix then draw up) unless you are going to immediately give them because they dont last very long if left mixed for more than about 24 hrs. Also you might want to buy a cheap thermometer to make sure your animals dont have fevers. Normal for most cats and dogs is between 101 and 102.5 degrees F but as long as the temp is not over 103 or below 99.5 you should be ok. If temp is not in that range they need to be seen by the vet because they could be very sick. If you ask the vet they will tell you the proper way to vaccinate. We recommended over the hips because they could move and work out the pain from the shot easier. Well I hope this helps, but if it were me and my vet only charged 25 bucks I would go to him. My two cats last vet bills for shots (Nov/Dec) were 42 and 39 dollars, and my German Shepard cost 100 dollars for her shots (though that included heartworm prevention for both dogs) My golden is due this month so I dont know how much she is going to cost but it is a lot more than 25 dollars and I live in a *cheap* part of Oklahoma!!! Good luck and sorry so long

You can't. The shots are only available to vets. Look around though, there are pet clinics all over the place that have specials on vaccines. I saw a flyer at Petsmart offering rabies shots for $5.

The rabies is controlled by each state. In my state, it is not legal for a person to give a rabies.
The so called "annual" vaccines are not needed. Dr. Ron Schultz of Winconsin University published a duration of immunity paper in 1999. All vaccines are good for a lot more than one year. Here's a link to his article:

All the vet schools in the U.S. have gone to a 3 yr protocol on vaccinations. Here's a site with a lot of links on vaccinations

I know that here where I am (east coast USA) you can't buy that medication unless you have a prescription from your vet.
Besides how would you know how much to give each dog. If you give too much then you run the risk of killing your dog. Too little then he is not protected correctly.
The shot has to be given in a muscle, do you even know how do give the shots correctly???
Who is going to certify your rabies certificate??? Here only a licensed vet can give rabies shots!

I wouldn't chance it.

Some times you can go to the vet on the first sat. of the month and get them for 1/2 price. But rabbies to be recognized if they ever got out and caught by the pound
