I'll answer this question although I'm not sure if this is simply a question to ask "why would anyone be an athiest". That's a whole different question.
As an athiest, I've actually thought about this quite a lot. I think it's the single most difficult thing to cope with personally. In my opinion fear of death is one of the main reasons people choose to continue worship (the main reason they start of course is because their parents tell them to). I often envy non-athiests because in most religions there is some assurance of a better world beyond the grave. It'd be nice to have that kind of peace of mind. However, I refuse to allow fear of the unknown to scare me into making a blind leap into what I consider to be an escape from reality.
I'd rather die knowing I never gave up on my convictions. I often think what it *could* be like for a Christian who's dying (I only chose Christianity because I grew up Christian and I know it better than any other religion). I wonder if the Christian who discarded possible friends/lovers because they were of differing mindsets, disowned his lesbian daughter, or recklessly condemned every non-believer to hell lays on his deathbed wondering "have I spent my whole life believing in a lie? Have I made mistakes based on a book written hundreds of years ago? What have I done???"
I figure I've lead a good life. If there is a god and he/she/it wants to punish me for not believing then so be it. I'd rather not worship a being that has such low self-esteem that it needs unblinking, blind servitute to allow people eternal bliss.

A dying atheist feels much like a dying Christian except without a belief in fairy tales.

Who knows what anyone feels when they're dying? You'll just have to find one and ask them

Oncoming decompession.
Whether you are aware of it or not...when you folks point out that we get no comfort from God during death....it strengthens our argument.
You believe in God for that reason. To feel comfort at death.
I'd prefer if there was an after life....but I'd also prefer to win the lottery.
Because it's comforting doesn't make it real.
I'd rather look at reality then a pretty illusion.

Probably the same thing that people with beliefs in a God do. You can't stop science. We all die in the same way, just of different causes.

Athiests believe that death is the end of biological function. So, probably he feels acceptance & pain, unfortunately.
