There are two things you can do with this situation. Buy a vadalia onion they are sweet, or if you must use a stronger onion I always hold a piece of bread in my mouth holding on to it slightly between my teeth and let it stick out of your mouth while you cut up the onion. Wala no more tears. I have done this for years. My mom taught me this.

first, cut the onion in half. then, rinse the onion in cold water for about a minute, and then your ready to cut. or if that doesn't work, rub lemon juice on your hands. that will help neutralize the acid in the onion.

I personally find that breathing through my mouth rather than my nose whilst chopping onions and having the extractor fan on seems to help.

running it under water is supposed to help, but personally I don't like doing this as it takes away some of the flavour too.

put a lump of bread in your mouth: overhanging your bottom lip, or try cutting it with the root intact. Another method is to soak the onion in boiled water for a minute or two first.

I believe if you cut with the grain of the onion as opposed to against it, it is a little more tolerable. otherwise try some eye gear. It might help....
