It was indeed because of a massacre, the Knights Templar were virtually wiped out after being accused of heresy. The order went out in secret and when everything was in place they were arrested and tortured into confession of heresy. Had to look at a few things to clear it up but the previous poster had the date right,Oct 13,1307.There are numerous links on the net using the knights templar or the date as searches, basically it seems that alot of it was done to gain the wealth that the Templars had built up over time. Not to mention that some disliked or even outright feared the influence the Templars had built up over time. There are of course other stories and perhaps some of them also have historic links but this is the only definitive one I've seen that could be used.

There is no reliable evidence that Friday the 13th was considered to be especially inauspicious before the late nineteenth century, though both Friday and the number thirteen were separately identified as negative[1]. Because of this, attempts to explain the superstition with reference to historical events are speculative.
One proposed origin relates to the Last Supper. Judas, the thirteenth guest, was instrumental in the Crucifixion of Jesus, which happened on a Friday.
Other theories offered in relation to Friday suggest that Eve offered the apple to Adam on a Friday or the slaying of Abel happened on a Friday (though the Bible does not identify the days of the week when these events occurred). [2]
One date that could be considered the cause of the fear of Friday the 13th could be Friday October the 13th 1307. On this day the Knights Templar were arrested all throughout Europe; however, there are few sources that will officially link these two events together.
Historically, there is no true date that the Friday the 13th can be linked to.

It comes from way back.
On Friday the 13th. The knights Templar were executed by an army sent from the Pope in Rome.
Originally they were Catholic knights that were commissioned by the Pope. They became very rich and very powerful. They controlled a huge amount of land.
Rome saw this as a ripe plumb to pick, get that money and land.
So The Pope sent an army against them and had them executed. It was unlucky for the Templars, wouldn't you say?

There are several theories, but that is all they are. Here is one...
When the death angel went through Egypt and killed all of the first born, this was the day before the Saturday the 14th of Nissan. This passover day was then Friday the 13th of Nissan, and a very unlucky day for the gentiles.
Again, just theory.

Actually there were a number of massacres on this day.
There were a series of doccumentries done on it.
Rumor has it that the mother of a boy who drowned because of camp counsellor's negligence slaughtered a whole bunch of teenagers at camp Crystal Lake many many years ago.
Sources say that although she was later killed in self-defence, the killings continued and still continue every few years.
The sheer brutality of the killings and nature of the background has caused ghost stories and myths to pop up about the incident and continued killings.

i agree. but that might be the only theory i know of.
some people dont believe the templars were servants of god. I personally believe they were like the mob who worked for hire, thus they have their reward, but that they hired out for "protection money".
