Because pieces of paper are generally larger and more noticable. Would make more sense to throw out paper though.

It's really not okay to throw anything out of your window...it's called littering. Plus throwing things out of your window (yes, cigarettes too) is distracting to other drivers. When I see someone throw something I out of a window, I automatically assume they generally don't care about the environment and they need to be educated. For the person who replied that they throw whatever out the window whenever they feel like it, see the news link below. The world is not your dumpster people!

Cigarettes are not flaming unless something has gone seriously wrong. It is not okay to throw anything out the window of a car unless it is a parked car sitting next to a trash can.

It is not okay to throw a burning cigarette out of a car window. Littering is littering. Anyone throwing anything out their car window is littering and will be ticketed if caught.

Many states have laws against throwing a cigarette out of the window now, given the threat of a fire hazard and littering.

Actually I think a cigarette toss is considered littering. A cop could nail you if he wanted to be a prick. Also I'd like to add, you cigarette tossers out there, be careful if there's a motorcycle behind you!! I'm sick of taking a hot cigarette off the chest.

I throw mine out the window all the time, never gotten a ticket for it, and why would you throw a piece of paper out of your car window anyway, were you drawing and messed up while you were driving or something?.. Throwing a cigarette out of a car window seems more likely to me.. Also I've never heard of a cigarette that got thrown out of a car window catching something on fire.. Because the cigarette isn't " flaming " it's lit, and the tobacco is burning yes, but after it's thrown out the window the wind would put the cigarette out before it hit the ground I would think, and if it didn't the cigarette would go out shortly after hitting the ground..

you can't throw a lit cigarette because of fire danger.
But the only thing that a you can drop on the road are clear water and believe it or not are chicken feathers and that's the law.

i say it should not be okay to throw a cig out of a window because it could cause a fire i dont think it is okay to throw any thing out of the window. people are stupid to think it is okay to throw a cig out of a window it can cause a fire.
