I was told that continually pressing '7' jams their system, which may be true, but it doesn't seem to prevent them from calling again a few days later. Asking them nicely to take me off their call list doesn't work.

Be careful of loose prize attracts etc, those regularly provide organizations the right to call you for a one in a zillion probability of prevailing. If it really is an distant places form, many times those gained't have caller identity, and many telephone organizations grant a provider to dam calls without identity.

Ask for the company name that is calling, then ask them to send you a 'Do Not Call Letter'. They can not legally call you for 5 years after that. With the letter you have the proof and you can sue them if they do call you again.
Or you can go to www.donotcall.org add your name to the list and noone (with the exception of volenteers, companies that you have an account with) can call you for 5 years.

put your phone number on the government's do-not-call list. it takes a bit of time to take effect, but it should greatly cut down on the number of calls you receive. also, get an answering machine and screen your calls. telemarketers won't talk to an answering machine.

It's better to get a caller ID and don't answer calls with 800 numbers on them, they get tired after a while.
