My co-worker tries to open a file from the public folder but when she does it opens as a Read Only file and makes it so she can't edit it (well she can edit but she cannot save!). However, everyone else in the office are able to open the file ok - without it being a Read Only file. Why is this? ...and how can we have it so she can open the file without it being Read Only?

Thanks deadhead ...but is there a way to have it so she doesn't have to save it under a new name every time she wants to edit the file?

There are a few possibilities. If it's a shared file, it could be that someone else has it open. In this case, anyone else can only open a read only version until the first person closes theirs.
If nobody else has it open, or it's not shared, then it's either because a "read only" box is checked in the file properties or the permissions are restricted to only give her read only access. Your IT guy should be able to fix it very easily. If you don't have an IT guy, try the following:
Check to make sure nobody else has it open, then right-click and check the properties of both the file and the folder/directory it's in. If neither of those work, then check the permissions in the Security tab of both the file and folder/directory properties. If none of those work, open the file from someone who does have write capabilities, then click on Tools in the menu bar, then Protection, and modify those settings to unprotect the worksheet.
It should definitely be one of those issues. The last resort if you can't fix it is creating a new file each time, but these steps should fix your problem. If I helped you, please help me by selecting mine as the best answer.

Is she trying to save the file in her own folder and not into the public folder. She should be able to save the file into her folder and edit it if she has the same access rights as everybody else. If not she will have to rename the file everytime!

try opening it and then saving it under a new name, then see if you can edit it. Once she saves it under a new name, can't she just keep using that document that she created, making chages or whatever is needed and then kepp saving it under the same name?
