I'm looking into purchasing a 'German shorthair' for a hunting dog and she has a white spot on her chest. They've sent me an emailed pedigree line but I wasn't sure if an actual german shorthair could have a white spot?

Yes, she is liver with one white patch on her chest and some roan on her paws.

A GSP can be liver, liver and white patched or ticked, or roan. Is this a solid liver dog with one white spot?

GSPs that are ticked are born mostly white (or white with liver patches) and have the ticking/roan come in as they get older.

Here is a photo of a litter at less than 24 hours old and the parents:

here are photos when they are older:

I have a GSP from an awesome breeder and I did a TON of research before I bought him. If you question the lines, post the names from the pedigree and I will see if they look familiar, or you can google the dog names in the pedigree.

Are the dog's parents certified for hips, eyes, etc? If they are you can look them up in the Orthapedic Foundation for Animals website. It will give their breed and you can click through the links to see parts of the pedigree.

Here is a link to the page for the mom of the litter on the above pages:

Above her name there are 3 choices, click on the one that says vertical pedigree and you will find the parents and grandparents in there.

A GSP can be a great dog, but some lines have higher drive and energy levels and I would want to make sure the dog matches your family.

Are you buying this dog through the internet?

I've had GSP and they have been mostly white-A liver coloured head-white body with liver spots-(the colour not the skin defect) kind of like chocolate chip ice cream!!!
they aren't dogs for the faint hearted-but their awesome when trained right!!!

Yes they can, my father owns 2 and 1 has some white on it. They are such cute dogs :o) I know they were bred for hunting dogs, but man they stink at "fetch"! Sure are great to hug though.

Having white has nothing to do with hair being short or long!
