Do you imagine that because someone's on the Idiot Box, they're a real poet? Try Rap, or Entertainment. Poetry is NOT a performing art. Crafting real poetry requires an intelligence, sensitivity, and depth of character that is seldom present in the sort of shallow narcissistic personalities who devote their entire lives to becoming a popular celebrity. I'm not saying that Pat's Justice doesn't do good work. My point is, the fact that something rhymes doesn't make it genuine poetry. Hallmark greeting cards usually rhyme and they're certainly not poetry. Rap is slightly better because Rappers generally have a social agenda, but Rap will never be poetry because it's handicapped by being a performance art.

In response to "thewhiz"

I agree that someone's not necessarily a "real poet" because they're on the "idiot box." I would also have to say that someone can't be disqualified as a poet, just because they're on television. Def Poetry actually features spoken word. Some feel that's an art form in itself. I've enjoyed the show for 3 seasons. I've seen good and bad. That's really just my opinion though. I don't feel the need to put down anyone's art, even if I don't like it.

I'm not sure if your negative comments come from the fact that you don't appreciate anything on the show or that you don't like that particular artist. I would encourage you to be more open minded about it. The show never claimed to be an authority on poetry or even among the best. It presents itself as art, much of which is intelligent, sensitive and deep. That may not apply to the majority of the artists on the show, but like most art, it's worth the effort to find something that really moves you.

There is a lot of trash on television, but that's all the more reason for intelligent, enlightened people to take back the medium. It's easy to find some crappy reality show or some fake excuse for news and criticize it. I think we're better off accentuating the positive. On television I saw a three and a half hour program featuring an interview with Jimmy Carter discussing the Middle East. On television I saw live performances of Jimi Hendrix who passed away when I was very young. On television I saw interviews with people serious about alternative energy. On television, I also saw some so-so movies and crappy reality shows, but I prefer to talk about the positive.
