Windows Vista has a built in zip utility that will open and create zip files. You could also try 7 Zip. It's free at: http://www.7-zip.org

If all you want to do is extract files then Vista (and XP) have built in zip extractors. I have not looked into using the default utility to compress files so I can't comment on that aspect. However, Izarc works just fine under Vista (and it's free and more feature rich than Winzip will ever be), http://www.izarc.org/

I'm assuming that you have tried the current version of Winzip on Vista and it didn't work. If you haven't tried it, chances are very good that it will work, many programs designed for XP will run under Vista (save for most anti-virus and firewall software).

On my XP machine, there's a 'built-in' compression utility. it recognizes winzip and when i send a compressed file, winzip at the other end recognizes it.

maybe with vista, you won't need winzip

residing house windows explorer won't unzip records. You uninstalled Winzip, and thats the utility you're able to unzip the zipped records. positioned the winzip returned on, or get yet another zip utility, or you mustn't be unzipping something returned.
