I work in Insurance, and it's like this. Women have more accidents, but there generally bumps and scratches due to general stupidity, such as reversing into the garage wall or hitting the car next to them in the supermarket car park. Men are involved in fewer incidents, but when they do crash, they are much more likely to have written their car off, and caused more third party damage/injury hence dearer premiums. My conclusion: Women are dizzy drivers, Men over estimate their own driving ability & Most think they can control their vehicle at speed, while only a few can safely.

They get in fewer accidents.
Insurance rates are based on odds. When you buy car insurance, you're betting that you'll get in an accident and they're betting that you won't. They set the pay out based on odds to make sure they win money when all of their bets are lumped together.
With women as a group, they can still win money in spite of collecting less from each individual because they don't lose as often (women aren't as likely to get in traffic accidents).
As to the reason why? Men are more aggressive and take more risks.
Avoiding accidents is more than just how good a driver is. For a given situation, a more skilled driver might be more likely to avoid an accident. But, if better skills mean a driver will accept riskier situations, then they've effectively cancelled the benefit of their driving skills (at least in how it relates to the chances of getting in an accident - they have increased the number of situations they're capable of driving in, though, which is of some benefit).
Unfortunately, with male drivers, a small increase in skill tends to result in a large increase in accepted risk. The bottom line is that male drivers may be more skilled drivers, but their increased risk acceptance tends to be greater than their increased skill.
Edit: If people realized that buying insurance was really betting that you'll get in an accident, then men's rates would probably rise even higher - losing a bet usually bothers men more than women.

Insurance is based on liaility. If an insurance company thinks it's going to shell out more money over time because men statistically have more accidents than women, then they are going to charge men more.

of course we are!
but it isnt true that all insurance companies give cheaper car insurance to women,in fact it all depends on driving experience and points on your licence. I bet if you could look at records for driving offences by men and women and compared - i bet you would change your opinion of 'us women' then.

I agree with you. It is a type of legalized discrimination and it's not right even though statistics might show that one sex is more risky than the other. Age and sex discrimination is the norm with insurance companies. Racial discrimination is not because they don't do those studies because you and I know exactly what would happen if they start charging certain races more. Hypocrisy I tell you! =)

I guess this comes from an era when less women drove and the insurance companies haven't figured this out yet. As a parent of both boys and girls it is annoying but SHHHHHH!, don't tell them you know they won't lower the guys insurance they will only raise the girls.

2 reasons
1-They drive more safely and defensively. I dont think it is because they are better drivers... I think it is becuase (in general) they are safer drivers. Men tend to drive faster and more aggressively which leads to more accidents.
2- An average male drives more miles per year than an average female. More hours behind the wheel means a higher likelyhood of an accident.

Unfortunately they are safer than your ar*e
They have fewer claims and fewer driving convictions
They dont have all your testosterone running through their bodies and thankfully are not out there to try to prove anything
I used to run a vehicle recovery operation and the worst drivers were.......... wait for it.............. MALE aged 17 to 25 and that is fact. Research it and you will find this to be true
I do realise that there are some awful women drivers out there but equally there are some even worse men
I ride a Harley and realistically would call for the entire driving standards to be improved. But dont knock the girls when its the boys who are up there with the worst of them
Yes I am a bloke but I still have this opinion

After yapping all night about nothing keepin the old man awake, they kick you out to go to work battling with all the traffic and stress whilst they stay in bed and rest, they call it house work! then the school run, av a chat, then back home for more sleep. Whilst the old mans now driving home with more stress and a bit of road rage and sleep deprivation, then you get home to your DIY and ding meal. then when you get to bed she wants to chat.
so to some up. yes men may have more smashes but only because, like they say "woman don't have accidents but they cause a lot".
