In my opinion Chimps would need to drop by several levels of intelligence to be on a par with humans.

Let me rephrase part of your question so it makes more sense:
"...developed intelligence comparable to the level of humans"
I am sure that is what you meant. Now to answer the question: Most other species do not have opposable thumbs so it would be fairly hard for them to challenge many abilities of human beings, namely construction - can you picture reptiles as smart as us building something?
The animals that would pose an interesting are more like chimps as you point out. I honestly believe that the chimps would try to seek a peacful coexistence with us, some humans would support it and most would be against it.
This would lead to a move to "control" the chimps, the chimps form a rebel group to fight and we have a human - chimp war.
Chimps would have a huge advantage though, they have more intel on human behaviour (from colleagues in zoos) than we have intel about their behaviours.

Chimpanzees struggle to understand basic cause and effect whereas humans understand things on many different levels at one time. No other creature has or ever will have anywhere near such a complex thought process as humans. They don't have the ASPM gene which controls brain growth in any case so their brains can't develop to the same extent as humans who do have it.

Imagine what you could do with your mind if you actualy put it to use. I have found dogs to be more human than chimpanzees, expecially when comparing to men. Perhaps if you stopped beleiving everything you read, you might actualy find information that is useful to you. Thank you.

As soon as it was determined that Chimps could communicate and be communicated with, the evangelizing would begin. We already place human moral standards on chimps.
