Stupid me got a speeding ticket, and earned myself 3 demerit points ... People are telling me different things - some say it will make my insurance go up for sure, and others say that it won't since it's my first offense. My insurance company is the co-operators. Can anyone tell me if they know how this company handles will raise my insurance since it's my first offense? Thanks! I'm dumb. :-(

Depends on how much driving experience you have.

If I got a traffic offense, I would almost guarantee you my rates wouldn't go up. My last traffic ticket was in 1978 (although insurance companies only go back about 3 to 5 years).

For a younger driver, an insurance company probably wouldn't be quite so forgiving. If the typical length of time they look back at your driving record is longer than you've been driving and you have an offense, then I could almost guarantee your rates will go up.

If you've been driving at least 3 to 5 years (depending how far back your insurance company looks back), then your rates probably won't go up for first offense. In any event, the rate change won't happen until it's time to renew your policy.

Any moving violation will raise your rates, and you will see the result of it on your next renewal. Just don't get any more tickets, and it will eventually go away.
