I have only a sketchy understanding of the history of the Bible. When was the last chapter of the Bible written? I guess different denominations adhere to different classifications. For example, I've been told that the Book of Mormons is considered a 3rd Testament and was published in the first half of the 19th century. I'm also aware that there are doctrines and other parts of the canon that are constantly being updated or reviewed by the Vatican. But what about the New Testament? When was the last passage written and by whom?

Dink: I didn't ask about the Bible as the Word of God. I asked about the Bible as a historical book important to many of the world's people. The question is about the history of the book itself.

Yes, we believe the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ (Jesus is mentioned by name on an average of once every 2.8 verses), you're correct about it first being published in the 1800's, but the last writer of that book Moroni, was estimated to be writing around 250 AD.

I've recently done some research on the timing books were written in the New Testament; and the general Bible Scholar consensus seemed to be the last books written were John 1,2 & 3 written by John at Ephesus (after his release from Patmos) around 95 AD.

I'm assuming your asking for the first writing by the original authors here -Hope that helps

"Chris P" is almost correct - if you assume that "Revelation" is the last book of what Christians call the "New Testament." But is is highly speculative to assume that the "John" in question was an apostle. No one has clue as to the identity of the "John" in question.

But also keep in mind that the actual compilation of most of the "New Testament" was done by a commission appointed by the Romans some hundreds of years after the death of all the writers. And no one has any idea what they did to the texts - even though we do know they cherry-picked re what should or should not be included. The unfortunate burning of the library of Alexandria destroyed much of the source and acta of that commission's work.

The book of Revelation.
Written about 90 AD.
He would have been a very old man for that time period.
Written through the Apostle John.
He was on the isle of Patmos, in prisoned.
He was the last Apostle alive.
He died of natural causes.
The rest were martyred.
He was the Apostle that always said that He was the one that Jesus loved. He was not opposed by the others when he said it either. It is interesting that Jesus did say something different about him, John that is.

According to early tradition, the writing of this book took place near the very end of Domitian's reign, around 95 or 96. Others contend for an earlier date, 68 or 69, in the reign of Nero or shortly thereafter. Those who are in favor of the later date appeal to the external testimony of the Christian father Irenaeus (d. 185), who stated that he had received information relative to this book from those who had seen John face to face. He says that the Apocalypse "was seen no very long time since, but almost in our day, towards the end of Domitian's reign" (A.H. 5.30.3), who according to Eusebius had started the persecution referred to in the book. However, recent scholars dispute that the book is situated in a time of ongoing persecution and have also doubted the reality of a large-scale Domitian persecution.

the NT itself has a different last chapter depending on the sect using it.

Revelations, which comes last in some groups, is generally dated well after the other parts.
