I think the death penalty is horrible, it is immoral to punish a crime with a crime. I am not opposed to it being administered however as I am not concerned with morality nor what is horrible or merciful. Kill them all if that resolves anything, guilt or innocence makes little difference once the procession of justice has begun. Every good farmer knows that a few shafts of wheat will fall when the weeds are culled.

I am against. It is too light a punishment for the crimes they commit. Especially lethal injection. They actually are given a sedative before putting them to sleep. That is no punishment as much as Christians claim they will receive their punishment after death that's bull. It makes Atheists wish there was a Hell. If they would hang the pieces of excrement it would be at least a little better. No death is too easy. The US should do away with the death penalty in favor of life without parole as most other countries have already.

I'm not a big fan of the death penalty, simply because i dont feel that it teaches the criminal any lessons. The fact that their victims are avenged by way of taking their own life, it probably gives comfort and satisfaction to the people who were negatively affected by the person who is being executed. But once they're dead, what have they learned? I don't know.. did they learn anything? And you can't ask them because they're dead. It's like they're off the hook. They most likely didn't value life while they had it, otherwise, they probably wouldn't have committed a crime so horrific that it was seen fit for them to face the death penalty. The death penalty is supposed to be about reaping what you sow, but is it really a good way to enforce that belief system? Because all a dead person reaps is freedom from the binds of the physical world.

I am against it for normal crimes because it is more expensive and impractical. There also is an element of racism to the way in which it is applied. I have no moral problem with protecting society from people by ending their lives.

I am in favor of the death penalty for cases of sedition/treason, and what I'd like to term economic sedition. To define the 2nd....take Kenneth Ley. He should ahve been executed. What he did bankrupted thousands, left thousands more enemployed....he undermined the entire economy. The effect he had on the nation needs to be punishable by death. Treason effects too many people to be handled as just regular crime.

I also obviously support the death penalty as an option for military courts. The chain of command, tradition, and structure all require death as a possible outcome for crimes during war time.

This is an interesting question. I am both FOR and AGAINST it for the following reasons (not quite 'traditional' reasons...):
I pay taxes. It sucks that some piece of crap rapist or murderer is living for free in a cage, eating food, and sleeping under blankets that we provide as tax payers when the citizens of this country are homeless, families are starving, and I need some damned dental work done that I'm neither poor enough to have the government pay for, nor rich enough to pay for myself.
However, I think that a child molester is better taught in prison that he has royally f'd up. It's not the fact that he's locked away, but rather that the people who are his inmates beat the holy hell out of him and sodomise him, among many other vile things that it's hard for we 'normal folks' to imagine. Chomo's get what's coming to 'em in prison. I think once that torcher is over, it's fine to kill them with the death penalty, because I sure as hell don't want to pay for them to go on living.
What's the point of living if you're in a cage anyway? I think if I went to prison for life, I'd just want to end it. There's nothing productive I could do if I were locked away forever, and unless I found something productive to do, there'd be no point. I would hope for the death penalty.
The death penalty is an easy way out for prisoners who deserve far worse-they deserve to suffer for the rest of their lives in a cage being treated like crap from the guards and other prisoners, but I sure as hell don't want to have my tax dollars going toward that when we have so many other social issues that the money could be going toward.

I am for in the cases that are open and shut - which are few and far between.

The justice system does not work perfectly in any country and would you want to find out you killed an innocent person or worse hundreds of them?

I think the justice system needs to be rethinked because too many criminals go to jail, come out and then committ crimes again - it would be better to focus on REFORMING criminals than just punishing them.

If the reformation does not work, then we should consider serious measures to keep them separate from society. I personally would feel guilty of killing someone who alredy can do no harm because they re locked away for life but I can understand that some people have major issues with their tax dollars being spent to feed and clothe these criminals.

I'm for a modified death penalty.
I think the punishment should befit the crime and I think the victims next of kin should be allowed to make the decision about the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
Also, in the case of the death penalty then the victims next of kin must carry out the punishment.

There should be no such thing as cruel and unusual punishment in the case of murder!

No government who does not use it has any legitimacy. The state can not fear to take the ultimate step. The idea that it is better to let them sit & regret (as if they would) while society supports them for life is childish beyond belief. Hopeing, as some liberals do, that criminals can write poetry or otherwise be "rehabilitated" after murder or rape or the like is unforgivable. Punishment 1st & ultimate punishment for crimes that cry out for it.

Against. I think having to live out life with the guilt of your sins weighing heavy on your heart is more punishment than death
