payment received no idea what auction it is for

It is probably a scam letter. There are a bunch of eBay scam letters going around right now.

If you click on the link on the email you received, it will look like you are logging into ebay but you are not. It is a fake website and when you type in your ebay account information, they capture your login name and password and start using your account.

Never log into eBay by clicking on a link in an email. Always go to www.ebay.com to log in.

You can forward that email to spoof@ebay.com

If you already clicked on the link and typed in your password, immediately log in at www.ebay.com and change your password.

Email him and ask! That's assuming he paid with paypal. If you recieved payment in the mail, I guess you could write him and ask. Or just wait. When he doesn't receive his product, he'll probably contact you to ask what's up and then you can explain that HE didn't provide the auction number.

Also, you could go through your auctions and see which one matches the amount he paid.

I assume you are talking about ebay? It should tell you in your ebay what sold.
