Don't worry, it's normal.

It takes 6-12 months for your lungs to self repair. That's with never touching another cig. I smoked a pack a day for 14 years, and quit cold turkey almost 2 years ago (it wasn't difficult at all past the first 2 days). Yet, I was sick multiple times over the summer after quitting (sinus / chest infections). I asked several doctors about the 5-7 year lungs healing myth and they all said it only takes 6-12 months, but, the first 6 months the person is likely to get sick more often. This is due to the lungs shedding their lining, which is the old brown nasty layer from smoking. The fresh layer underneath is pink and fresh tissue, but very susceptible to the slightest infection. The doctors were pretty much exact in their descriptions. I'm at 19 months since quitting, but stopped coughing any junk up at about the 6 month point.

Hang in there. It will get better within a few more months.

edit: I'll repeat part of that, as the post below mine is completely false. Doctors say it takes 6-12 MONTHS for your lungs to return to normal (not years). I've gone through it, and by 8-9 months my lungs were normal.

The number one cause of lung cancer is smoking!

The average age for the onset of lung cancer is 60.

The signs of lung cancer are often missed because they can be mistaken for lots of other things...these signs include a cough (75%) blood or pus in the stuff you cough up (60%) and chest pain (15%). These are the most common.

Once you find out you have lung cancer it is most likely it has already spread through out your body. Only 20% of all people who have lung cancer are qualifers for surgery...

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in all people who get cancer.

The five year survival rate is less than 5%.
Of the people who live five years 80% will have it spread to thier brain.
Of the people who had surgery...50% chance of living 5 years.

You are young and if you dont ever smoke again then your lungs will go back in about 10 years to that of a non smoker and that means your risk for getting lung cancer will also be that of a non smoker.

I would not worry about it because you are so young but you can always ask your dr for a chest x ray just to make sure...

BUT I ADVISE YOU TO QUIT SMOKING FOR GOOD.

If you stay off the cigarettes, your chances of getting lung cancer will drop significantly. It isn't very likely that you'd get it after only 3 years of smoking but keeping off the smokes will allow your body to heel and recover some of the damage you've caused.

Depending on when you quit smoking, your body could just be trying to flush out the bad chemicals.

To be sure, I'd recommend checking with your doctor. The pains you're getting could be from something else.

Anyone who smokes is in danger of lung cancer. If u quit your body may hurt from it getting rid of all the toxins, maybe your lungs hurt, they are trying to clean themself up. Go to a doctor if the pain stays there. U will get colds easy if u are or were a smoker, till your body gets back to where it should be.

I would doubt it's cancer already. You're pretty young. Your lungs are still healing, you may have a chest cold or something that's taking a while for your body to fight. Go to your doctor, you may need anti-biotics. I've had something where I didn't feel good for over a month, doctor put me on cycle of anti-biotics. I started feeling a lot better after a couple of days.

If unsure : Consult a doctor. If he/she thinks it serious a chestpicture can be taken. that would stop you worrying. Smoking always can cause lung cancer. Good on you to give it up.
