My college professor in my Religion 100 class is requiring the class to write a paper on three responders that represent as much diversity as possible in religious beliefs. I live in a small town where everyone is a Christian and don't know anyone that is anything other than that. I chose my mother for my 1st Responder and now I need two others. If you have a differing opionion towards religion, I could really use your help. If you could help me, either answer on here or email me- saragoff0587@hotmail.com
All I have to do is have a 50 word summary of general information about you, and then another 50 word summary of your answer to the following question: "Why do you think people are religious?" Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I'll be happy to help you out.
I'm an agnostic Jew. My parents were both non-practising Jews, but I did attend Hebrew school for a few years, and I did recieve my Bar Mitzvah. The Jewish culture is very important to me, however I am not as familiar with the religion as I should be. I was inattentive in Hebrew School, and it was a very long time ago.
I think people are religious for different reasons. The two main causes of faith are indocttrination, or gnosis. Indocrination means that you are religous because you were raised to be religious. You were trained to believe the things you believe. Gnosis means that you've had some experience of God, so have faith based on what you experienced.
In the greater sense, people are religious because it allows them a way of understanding the world around them. It gives people a sense that they can control their evnvironment. The biggest factor here is death. Religion is a way of thinking we are immortal, and can conquer death.

I believe in an Unconditionally loving God who would never judge anyone for anything.
Without judgment the whole christian paradigm quickly falls apart. No Judgment means no sin. No sin means nothing to forgive.
Just a God that loves us just the way that we are.
People are religious because they have been told that God is not interested in talking directly to them. So they just believe what they are told they should believe and never listen to the voice of God within them.
This is a poor substitute for a real personal relationship with God but it is all that they have because religion has convinced them that God doesn't have time for them. This is sadder still because religion has confused the message so much that if they do hear what God is saying to them they don't recognize it because it is almost the exact opposite of what religion has told them.
Love and blessings Don

I'm not religious at all, dispite being raised Baptist. I have come to believe that people are religious, because they are evil. Religion gives them a chance to pray to their God for forgiveness; decide on their own that they have been forgiven, and move along their merry way. It's like permission to be bad, as long as you say your sorry.
Personally, I believe that you shouldn't do anything you aren't proud of, and if you do wrong, you should ask the person your wronged for forgiveness... but, I'm funny like that.

It's hard for most People to get a handle on my religion but I'll share it with You. It's the oldest religion on the planet, it's called Pieganism. It's the worship of delicious baked goods, it's known by the number 3.14etc., which is proof beyond doubt. The principle is that we all have to eat. That's it, just enjoy your dinner, from way back to this very day. Take care.

Im a Taoist, we meditate and believe in the teachings of Lao Tzu, who teaches we come from the elements: earth, fire, wind and water. Taoists believe God is impersonal and a force of nature that drives all life, animals, humans even trees.
