Here is my situation....I have been on the birth control pill for two full months now. I am on my period and my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex yesterday morning. I called my doctor this morning and she said it was very unlikely that I would become pregnant. I know the doctors advice is best but can anyone out there make me feel more assured? Thanks!

The birth control pill is effective after seven consecutive days of taking it, so long as you've taken it correctly-not missing pills, taking the pill at the same time each day, not taking medications that could interfere with the pill, and so on. Taken correctly, the pill is incredibly effective at preventing pregnancy.

The pill works in three ways-it puts your ovaries to sleep, so that you don't ovulate (and therefore can't get pregnant), it thins the lining of your uterus so that it's not a good place for a baby to grow, and it makes the mucous at your cervix thicker and more difficult for sperm to penetrate.

If you've taken your pill correctly. and you were menstruating at the time, it's incredibly unlikely that you could get pregnant. If you're still concerned, consider using the pill with a second form of contraception like a condom to even further reduce your risk of becoming pregnant.

You could always go to Walgreens and get the Plan B morning after pill if you think that would make you feel better :) it's about $42, at least in FLA it is. However, I really don't think you're pregnant though...I took the pill for 2 years and had unprotected sex (with one partner whom I'd been with for many years) all the time and never got pregnant :)

I was on birth control for 2 years and there were times where i thought I was pregnant too. The side effects that BC give make you THINK you are pregnant but if you've been taking your pills consistently like you're suppose to then it's unlikely you are. But if you still feel uneasy, go get a Birth control test. Every woman's body is different so it's really up to you on what it is you want to do but to reassure yourself, you should get a BC test if it's bothering you.

Good luck babygirl!

After 2 months the birth control will be in effect and most birth contorls are 98% effective. Some people still run the risk of becoming pregnant, but it is very rare. You would have to fall in that small 2% range which is unlikely if you take into consideration the number of people the statistic is based upon.

The only way you will feel assured is to take a home pregnancy test in a couple of weeks, anything is possible. My sister was on the pill for 4 years and got pregnant with twins!!!

I hate to tell you this....but you can become pregnant anytime. ANYTIME.
All those "precautions" you take are just "bettering your odds."

Not wise to ever engage in unprotected sex.

And here's a little treat for the posters who gave me a "Thumbs Down".......Gee, I knew we were living in a dumber society, but I had no idea there were people who actually disapproved of FACTS:

What are the odds of getting pregnant if the woman is on the pill, and a condom is used?
Question:

Statistics are often quoted for the effectiveness of the pill and condoms, but only when they are the only birth control measure taken. What are the odds of getting pregnant if the woman is on the pill, and a condom is used, and both are "administered" correctly? How about the odds for the average person (i.e. regular use)?
Answer:

About 14 out of 100 women who use condoms will become pregnant during the first year of typical use. Only two women will become pregnant with perfect use. More protection against pregnancy is possible if condoms are used with a spermicide such as a foam, jelly, suppository, film, or if combined with another birth control method such as the pill, patch, Depo shot, etc. The Pill is one of the most effective reversible methods of birth control available. Of every 100 women who use the Pill, only five will become pregnant during the first year of typical use. Fewer than one will become pregnant with perfect use. Birth control pills work best if taken at about the same time every day. Pregnancy can happen if an error is made in using the Pill — especially if 1) pills are started too late in the cycle, 2) two or more pills are missed in a row, 3) pills are taken in the wrong order. In cases like these, a back-up method such as a condom, would decrease the probability of pregnancy. The birth control pill does not offer any protection from STD’s. Latex and female condoms can also help prevent the transmission of STD’s such as HIV.

If you are on the pill and had sex during your period the chances are slim to none. Periods you have on the pill are only due to the fact that the pills during your period are sugar pills. They have no hormones in them, so your body goes through withdrawal and you have break through bleeding. I never took my green pills (the ones for the week of your periods) and I never got pregnant. (I was on the Pill for 7 years.) I only took the ones with the hormones in them.

I've never heard the one about antihistamine canceling the pill. But I know antibiotics will weaken the effects of the pill. If you are on antibiotics, use a condom for the month.

You are still on the pill? Then it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. 2 months is enough time for the pill to work.

If you're on the pill and were on your period when you had sex, your chances of getting pregnant are negligible (tending towards 0).

Nonetheless, you should always use condoms, because they're the only protection against STDs.
