the thing i dont understand, people who say it shouldnt be madatory but if you can you should, why not make people, once a year no damage to their own health, and a massive chance of saving people's life!

I gave blood for 40 years but cannot now as I am on beta blockers...great pity but rules are rules. I have met a lot of people who say that they will not give blood because they do not want needles stuck into them & I just ask them if they were in their own life threatening situation how would they let the doctors administer blood (if necessary) to them..never had a sensible answer and I think I am responsible for getting over 100 people in my life to give blood. My wife's life was spared shortly after giving birth to our second daughter with transfusion of over 24 pints so although I cannot give blood myself I try and make up for it by getting others to do such a really important & necessary service.

I don't think anything should be mandatory when it comes to our own bodies and the choices we are free to make for ourselves. However, I do strongly believe that if you can give blood, or anything else that could help someone, that you should. I don't like to be told what I have to do, but I do enjoy helping people when I can. I have not been able to give blood, because I have gotten recent tattoos. It's not that everyone is selfish or evil, there are just a lot of safety precautions that hold people back from actually giving. If you feel the need to join people together and encourage them to donate blood, try going about it in a less demanding or forceful way. Believe it or not, there are still good people out here in this messed up world that care about people that they have never even met. Keep faith that people do come through when really needed. Good luck.

so does extreme anxiety of needles count as not healthy enough?
do we need to torture people for a blood supply?
who defines "healthy enough"?????
most people would probably argue I am "healthy enough" but my body is easily upset by any imbalances. I have discussed donating blood with my physcian beacuse i do believe if at all possible we should help one another and i can see first hand the benefits ( I am a nurse)
after carefull consideration we decided that donating blood would probably be an unneccassry stress for me.
Let people make up their own minds. When crisis occurs the donations come in.

If you've got any diseases or illnesses that can be transmitted via blood transfusion that would be the most obvious excuse, though people are often scared of giving blood etc because of needles or not liking blood.
The most obvious reason for not giving blood is laziness, though not everyone is made aware of how important and necessary it is to give blood. I personally never have because I would probably throw up or something if someone stuck a needle in me and took a pint of my blood.
Saying that though one of my old work friends used to do it regularly and I agreed to go with her providing she held my hand, but it never happened.

There can be no excuse. Now in my71st year I have given 155 donations after I was given a lot of blood after a motorcycle accident. Those who do not donate would be the first to complain if the Hospital did not have any when they were admitted as an emergency accident case.

I can't because I was in Europe for 3 years. They said it was something about mad cow disease. People who were in certain European countries during the 80s and 90s can't give blood...P.S. I am a healthy male, I guess it's just precautionary.

there is if you are on certain medication or have had certain health problems diseases or whatever they wont take your blood.
I dont think it should be mandatory as that would violate human rights, being that its your blood and yours to give away if you so wish, what with all the free choice and freedom of doing what u want with your own body thing.

Mom mother has donated since I was in a terrible accident in 1984. This year due to illness she cannot. It broke her heart - she thinks everyone who can should. Next time it might be your little girl that is saved.
