It is a rare occurence but it can happen. Here are some signs that would tell you if he did indeed have a stroke. If he is showing any of the signs, take him to your vet asap and let them know. To diagnose a Stroke the vet will order a MRI or CT scan.

Head tilt.
Turning the wrong way when called.
Eating out of one side of food dish.
Blindness.
Loss of balance.
Lethargy.
Loss of bladder and bowel control.
Abrupt change in behavior

My old dog had a stroke. and it was very noticeable. She tilted her head to one side, walked as if drunk for 24-48 hrs and lost the ability, at the time, to hold her bladder. If any of these things happen then I would say that the dog has had a stroke. With just a limp it would seem maybe something more mechanical.

Yes they can.The vet should be able to tell straight away whether he has had a stroke or not. I dont think limping is a sign. I was holding my dogs head off our tiled floor whilst she had her stroke, after she was very quiet and couldnt open one of her eyes, i took her to the vet the next day and the stroke was confirmed.

Yes they can, even hamsters can. My sisters dog suddenly had problems with her back legs and diagnosed with a stroke. Unfortunately had to be put down. Hope your dogs fate is different and good luck with the absolutely ridiculous vet fees lol

yes dogs can have strokes, but if hes only limping it do not sound like a stroke, be more concerned with injury or even joint or bone disease, if the limp continues get another vet ASAP!!!!

As the others have said, yes they can. Animals can also have fits.
If you're sure that it's not just a "normal" injury to the leg, then maybe you should consider asking the vet about that.

Just a thought
