I couldn't begin to come up with a mathematical percentage, but I trust God knows His own. You're right, there are a LOT fewer Christians out there than there are people calling themselves Christians, and they work to undermine the rest of us. As predicted in the Bible.

OH WOW, I love your question. The same question has been on my mind for over ten years. It seems to be very few. In my opinion, a real chosen one doesn't feel the need to go to a CLUB , whoops, I meant to say church once a week to find God. Many so called christians are living secret lives such as some preachers were found to be doing in 2006-2007. It is as Jesus said,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,VERY FEW WILL MAKE IT. My percentage estimate in my opinion is 10 or 15 percent are REAL chosen ones.

the correct figure of Christians is two billion and growing
I am not a christian in Jesus' sense - I try to be, I'm always trying. But the thing with christinaity is, as opposed to otyhe religions - it is much harder to be a christian than any other religion. how many people find it easy to turn the other cheek, or love their neighbour - no one on earth finds this easy. Jews and Muslims on teh other hand are encourgaed to defend themselves when attacked, their religion is all too human, based on what comes naturally, where as christian is divine and difficult to follow, it is Godly in nature na dthat is why so many people fail - the thing is many Christians try, and are trying all teh time. Americans try, tehy fail, but they keep trying - as do i. but just look at the good america and other christian countries have done and you will see an example of chritianity in action
let us not be negative
but the pope said, I would rather have half teh catholics that i do, as long as they were better christians - the pope thirst for a pure church of good christians, i think we all try

There are over 800 million Christians. Over 6 billion people on the earth. The percentage is something like 15%, maybe.

The ones I've encountered here, once you get there back up,
can spew the vile just as well, if not better than I.
Of the number you mention 1 to 2 billion. Professing is the key word . Only about 100,000 will ever be true over comers! I saw that I could never be, I really wished I could, but my rebellious nature just won't give way! It's very comforting to think your special to the creator, but your not. Your just another brick in the wall.[no Pink Floyd puns please]!!!

in many given churches in the nation... I would say about 20% maybe? I have been to many... lots of people are just 'putting in their hour' of the week... whether they feel obligated or whatever to be there. many go to church because their spouse wants them there... or their parents make them go. even in the church i attend right now... that is not a 'religion' but a gathering of believers.... i think that there are still 50% who are just doing lip service and not heart service to God...
the Morality of the population has fallen far from God's standards... we are sinful people .. even people who claim to be christian (like the BTK killer??) are immoral... it grieves my Spirit

I would be surprised if 20% of those professing to be Christian are truly following Christ's WAY. HE will be the Real Judge but I would be surprised to find that many in truth. I am rather pessimistic aren't I? We should be reading, studying, and following GOD's WORD as it is written. Those who do will be much more likely to be True to GOD's WORD when the Judgment arrives. There are too many that want to make their own way rather than to follow HIS. The New Testament gives us a number of examples that we should be able to study them for our religious practices and see what the First Century Churches did and did not do. Paul added comments that are inciteful and assisted those churches whenever he was able to do so.
Study these scriptures and see what you think. To become a Christian:
1. We must HEAR GOD’s WORD. - Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
2. We are told to BELIEVE. - To the Prison guard in Acts 16:31 Paul and Silas said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."
3. We must REPENT (turn from) of our sins. - Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.
4. We are told to CONFESS CHRIST before men. - Matthew 10:32 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
5. We are to enter the waters and BE BAPTIZED. - Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
6. We are told to CONTINUE TO BE FAITHFUL until death. - Revelation 2:10b Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Send me a note if you have questions. I am anxious to hear from you. Have a Great day.

I could not even venture a guess. It's not up to me to decide anyway. That's up to God. All I know is that as a Christian who is raising children, it's not easy living a Christian life these days. There is so much garbage readily available to all of us through television, the Internet, on the radio. It's a constant battle to keep it out of our lives.
May God Bless you.

You make a good point when you see the behavior of our nation - but we are broken, we are sinners in need of a Savior. God looks on the heart and he is the judge, not us.
Our focus is to be like Christ, unconditionally loving and accepting, but staying saying there is a right and wrong.
But only God can see the heart. I am glad he is loving enough to forgive me when I fail.
