how come there isn't a single contemporary historical account? The first one doesn't come for 40 years!

Actually, there IS somewhat of an historical account. Nero, who was Roman emperor from 37 AD to about 68 AD, heavily persecuted thousands of Christians. If there weren't so many of them, they wouldn't have been considered a threat to the Empire, which means they wouldn't have been persecuted. But they were. There's your historical account. Actually, Christians were heavily persecuted by the THOUSANDS until Constantine became Roman Emperor in the 4th century.
One of the most well-known (and proven) tales of persecution was by Hadrian, who became the Emperor in about 117 AD. He had pagan temples built over the sites of where Christian pilgrims believed that Jesus had been born in Bethlehem, and where He had been buried outside Jerusalem. Archaeological expeditions uncovered 4th century churches, which are believed to have been built by Constantine's mother, Helena. Underneath those were 2nd century temples, which were probably built by Hadrian. Underneath those were a tomb and a cave (the cave is probably where the stable was located).
So yes, it is recorded. It was just a very dark time in history, and besides, early Roman history (pre-Constantine) is murky at best.

Good question Brendan, I think the answer is that Jesus had His greatest support amomg the poor and unlearned who in those days were mostly illiterate and would not have been able to write down this or other events, again it may not have been the right thing to do as the Jews were an oral tradition people, the 500 people that Christ appeared to after His resurrection were believers who did not need to write about it as they saw and believed already, in any case it was left to the leaders of the believers (Apostles) to do this.

I believe that Jesus was probably an ordinary man with charismatic qualities. As his story got told, it was greatly embellished until he was "given" supernatural" abilities. Hence, the religion of Christianity came into being. If, in actuality, he had done what he is credited with, we would certainly have some first hand accounts. If enough people believe a myth, the myth gets called history by many people. Historians on the basis of documentation can only say that Jesus probably lived. No historian on a scholarly basis can attest to his having been divine.

Jesus appeared before his followers only before he ascended into heaven.

The leaders weren't followers. If you read a bible you'll see that the leaders were riding around trying to silence the word of God. Obviously they failed. Just as you have with trying to prove a point via this question.

He appeared on and off for 40 days until his ascension into heaven. Many witnesses testified to this fact in those times and it has been documented in the original manuscripts of scripture. Many people who were still alive when the book of John was written testified to this. Why would 500 people tell the same exact lie?

You either believe the truth.....or believe a lie.

You choose......

I choose Christ!!

Additionally, why is there no birth record, death record, no historical record that Pontius Pilate ever put someone named Jesus (or remotely close to that name) to death? Why didn't the secular historians of his time even give him a passing glance?
Could it be that he just didn't exist?
