A soldier friend got in trouble and needs some ideas for an essay. His DS wants an essay on:

What is the purpse of the military's standard of respect (and standards of bearing)?

My last question wasn't catchy enough. Maybe this one will get more responses. Sorry to bother you.

Thanks!!!!! We appreciate it.

He's on a P3 profile in the middle of a medboard, and the DS was pissed off that he wouldn't get down and do his PT. He tried to show the DS his profile, but he wouldn't read it. So he tried, but it took him a little while longer than the rest and the DS got even angrier... and when he finally did see the profile, he was pissed that he couldn't smoke him for it, so he gave him an essay.

Is that better?

In my view on the matter, the purpose for the military's standard of respect is you give it and sooner or later you get. You have to understand and deal with where you are on the totem pole. When you first join you are like a child. You have to show respect then too. When you earn respect you get it and just like in life it is a hard road. The military will be harder on you than your parents but they don't have 18 or more years. It is a crash course either you can do it and deal with it or you can't. Don't know if this helps but I hope so. It is all about the bigger picture.

I do believe that your "soldier friend" needs to do this on his own and learn. There is a reason he must write this essay. Being that it's in regards to Standards of RESPECT and Standards of BEARING, I would assume that this person had shown a lack of respect and bearing. This soon to be soldier should learn to respect the authority of the DS and just suck it up and drive on. My best advice is to tell him to keep his mouth shut, speak only when spoken to, do what the leadership tells him to do, and give a 110% at all times.

As long as he wasn't disrespectful about it, your friend needs to talk to his 1SG. They cannot punish him for being on profile, or for being med boarded. In fact, the DS is wrong for making him break his profile.

If they got in trouble, then they need to do their own essay. All they have to do is look up the regulations and start writing. Not difficult.
