they pretty much do what they want...you need to have your partner "stand down" and let you take over their commands what the partner is still in the room so the dogs know.

Dogs generally have one owner they will obey above anyone else. This is just because they are pack animals by nature so you're doing nothing wrong! Sounds like the 1-year-old sees you as the leader and your 3-year-old considers your partner to be the leader. It depends on who's been spending the most time with them and (especially) feeding them.

Dogs establish pack. You may not be as high on the pack list as your partner. Try obedience with your dog. You will work with your dog and there will be a mutual respect. Be patient, consistant and havedfun when you train. Avoid food training because its an avoidance. Talk to some trainers in your area.

Most dogs only see one person as the pack leader so afraid you will have to play 2nd in command when your partner is around

You are not the alpha dog in this family, apparently...this is how dogs are...get used to it....dogs are pack animals by nature and have only one leader, one alpha male or female...we have 2 dogs like this, too...unless one or the other of us is not here, mine won't listen to him and his won't listen to me...when I am gone, daddy is in charge and given the accorded respect and when he is gone, I am the pack leader. It's reality and we know that and accept it...getting our noses bent out of shape would be pointless.....

It sounds like the dog does not recognize you as dominant. You might want to try speaking in a lower voice to him. High-pitched or sing-song voices (not that you're using one) do not convey dominance. I find that my beagle responds better to my husband than to me. When I use a lower, firmer voice, he listens to me more. Good luck, hon!

Dogs know who the weak link is. They're very bright. In this case I'm afraid the weak link is you!!
