i don't think so. our system produces engineers who can not only stand on their own legs but can also make the following stand/work
1. bridges
2 rail roads
3. buildings
4. ships
5. telecom towers
etc etc
our engineers are doing a great job.
three cheers to the engineers and their trainers!

Their textbooks are too heavy?
Seriously though, I cannot say if the US has a better program than other countries. I haven't attended classes in another country and the few foreign engineers I've met could hardly be called a significant sample size. I can, however, give my impressions on how to make the US system better.
First, there is way to much information given for a 4 year degree. Most engineering students I know feel overwhelmed by the volume of work and classes. Basically , quality is being sacrificed by quantity. Either make engineering a 5 year degree or remove some of the general knowledge for specialized engineers. For example, I'm a structural engineer, so I don't really need to know about hydrology or even too much geology. I also don't need to know about relativity or optics, yet I was taught some of all those things in my undergraduate degree.
Also of note is that new engineers aren't expected to be able to "stand on their own legs." This is why you can't get a PE until you've had some experience. Unfortunately, you can't have it both ways. You can either say experience is necessary and provide that training to get experience, or you let them be professionals right out of college.

Why do you say that? All the engineers my husband and I graduated with are more than capable. As to foreign engineers, most of them are paid less because they know less. Did you know in India and China "engineers" only get a two year degree equivalent to an engineering technology degree in the US. They aren't paid the same because they are not anywhere near the same. So they talk about all the "engineers" they are graduating, but they aren't at the same level.

Whose "our" are you referring to?
Can't be the US. I graduated with my BS in '98 and was employed within 2 weeks of graduation, solving problems independently from the start. Most of my class was in the same situation.
The engineers that I've found lacking in basic knowledge have received their education overseas, specifically in India and China. These are usually the fresh graduates and many of them have great difficulty with open ended problems that aren't plug and chug.

I'm not sure which country you're talking about but the new hires we've been getting from the US have been very good lately. I see some new people from other countries where it takes about a year to get them productive but it's not because of their education but because of their culture. They're not allowed to make choices. They are told who to marry and when to marry and to believe in crap like astrology. It takes a while for them to learn to think for themselves.

My Engineering degree opened many doors for me, and since I had the abilty, I stood on my own two legs and excelled. If your schools failed to equip you, then you went to the wrong school.

If you are an engineer yourself, then you must be one of the failures that you talk about. Anyone with common sense knows that there are a range of competence in any field.

Delusions of grandeur, alot graduate with dollar signs in their eyes. Foreign engineers expect to be paid much less and are.
