An Hors d'oeuvres are what you have at a party, just walk around and pick them up
Appetizers are what you have at a sit-down meal, an opening "meal" as it were.

An appetizer is used to open your appetite and is usually finger food, passed around by a waiter or set on a tray. It isn't served at the table. Hors d'oeuvres are the same thing, just the French word for appetizers.
There is no snobby stuff involved here... appetizers or hors d'oeuvres, were first served in France and that's why they are called hors d'Oeuvres... appetizers is the english translation really.

Hors d'Oeuveres means Appetizers in french basically, so really it depends on if you are trying to impress someone and want to use the french version or not.

Appetizer is something you eat before the main course at a sit down dinner. Hors d'Oeuvres are small, usually bite sized prepared items that are passed among guests at an event.

A appetizer is something served before the main meal.
Hors D'Oeuvres are small bits food often served on crackers or small pieces of toast, for eating at cocktail parties or other gatherings where drinks are served with no other food.

The snobbishness of the affair.
Regular folks have 'appetizers' or 'finger foods'.
Snobs have 'hors d'oeuvres'.

Hors d'Oeuvres is a classier term for the Appetizers--and classier food; like say, sushi and caviar instead of Nacho's and boneless chicken wings (to use extremes).
