Just as lambs were used in the Old Testament for sacrafices, Jesus is pictured as the lamb that was sacraficed for our sins. God was not pleased with the blood of lambs because they could only cover sin. Christ's death on the cross was the only way that sins could truly bee removed. Read through the book of Hebrews. It will explain a lot. The Old Testament was only a shadow the things to come and not the verry things themselves. The lambs were not God's final plan...they were only a picture of what was to come.

John H is correct in his definition, however, it was a BIG sacrifice to God because He had to watch His perfect, sinless Son suffer and die for sinful man. God could not bear to look at Jesus Christ when all the sins of everyone were on him and that is why Jesus Christ felt forsaken when he was on the cross.
Before Jesus Christ, the blood of lambs, goats, oxen, bulls and other animals were sacrificed so much that they had to build a trough to carry the blood away from the Temple mount.

Lamb of God (Latin: Agnus Dei) is one of the titles given to Jesus in the New Testament and consequently in the Christian tradition. It is believed to refer to Jesus' role as a sacrificial lamb atoning for the sins of man in Christian theology, harkening back to ancient Jewish Temple sacrifices in which a lamb was slain during the passover, the blood was sprinkled along the door, and the lamb was eaten.

Jesus was the initiation of the Piscean Age
In Aries, Age of Old Testament, may have started about the time Abram sacrificed a ram instead of his son, Isaac. God was above, reached by the fire from burnt offering.the age of promise of abundance
Piscean Age is the fish, who doesn't know he is in water(God) until he is awakened by water(baptism is the symbol, but it's a long process). then he is made of the sea and lives in the sea and knows it, christ consciousness. It is the age of initiation or trial and tribulation to learn to follow in Jesus'path.

He is a sacrifice that was provided by God to cleanse all mankind. Hence the possessive "of". But He is a shepherd too, go figure. Nothing really makes sense in the spiritual realm, but if it did, we wouldn't need faith.

People used to sacrifice lambs. God sacrificed Jesus. Though, really it wasn't much of a sacrifice, since he came right back.
