Most LCD panels are manufactured in the same building by the same parts supplier, so the differences are not nearly as great as implied by manufacturers. That being said, there are a few key features to look at.

Resolution- if you want to view the best HD signals you will want an LCD that is 1920x1080 resolution. try to avoid displays with odd resolutions like 1366x768 since none of your content is actually at that resolution. HD is either 1280x720 or 1920x1080, it is best if your tv can display these resolutions without scaling ie natively.

Viewable angle- the closer to 180 degrees the better. this means you can still see the image when you are not looking directly at the screen

Refresh rate: this is how fast the display redraws the image. the faster the better. this will eliminate blurry action and ghost images. 60hz is common (thats 60 times per second) 70 is better. the higher the number the better.

contrast ratio- this is kind of an abstract idea. Technically this is the difference between black and white. So if it is listed at 1200:1 that means that the black is 1200 times more black than the white is. yeah, right, that makes sense! Manufacturer's typically make up a large number here since it is nearly impossible to take a real measurement. Ultimately, it is more difficult to produce good blacks, so look at the quality of the black on the display.

In the end, you are the one watching this TV so pick one that looks good to you. The differences have more to do with the image processing than the LCD itself. Some of the more expensive units will do 1080P this means it can do a progressive scan 1920x1080 image. This is nice, but only useful if you are watching HD-DVD or Blue Ray Disc (also PS3). TV is not broadcast anywhere at 1080P (only 1080i which is interlaced or 720p).
