The base of both is the same. Oxycodone is oxycodone whether it's in Percocet, Oxycontin, Percolone, Roxidone, whatever. The difference between percocet and Oxycontin is that Percocet is an immediate relase medication and the opiate is mixed with Tylenol. Oxycontin is a pure opiate, and is time released so it lasts 12 hours. If the doc has prescribed both, it's because the Percocet is for any pain that breaks through the Oxycontin. For example, I take Oxycontin 40 mgs every 12 hours and also am prescribed Oxy IR, 2 every 4 hours if needed for breakthrough pain. The combination has given me my life back.... a year ago I was completely unable to get out of bed or function.... now I am working, have lost 20 pounds and have an exceptional quality of life.

Different drug manufacturers....go to WebMD to research actual clinical names, you are referencing "trade" names.
