Would 30 minutes of stop and go traffic be worse for a car than 30 minutes of cruising at 50 MPH? Vice versa? One car is a 1997 Saturn Station Wagon w/ Manual transmission and the other car is a 2002 Lancer. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of moving out of the city to a more rural area that is roughly 28 miles from my job. Any opinions?

The 30 minutes of stop and go traffic is worse for a car than cruising. Cars are built to cruise and get more miles per gallon cruising than in stop and go traffic.

You should weigh your option to move on other aspects. If you move you'll get used to the 28 mile drive. Many people drive farther to work daily.

Best of luck to you.

You want a low miles car. Since you know you will be putting a lot of mileson a car you don't want to buy something that already has too many miles. Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Mazda are all good cars. Look for something that has less than 80K miles on it. Age isn't important what is important is the overall condition of the car. Was it well maintained and does it still run good. Whatever car you decide on needs to be inspected before you make a final purchase decision. DO NOT skip this important step.

I think 30 minutes of stop and go traffic would be more wear and tear on your car than 30 minutes of cruising. First of all, you'll be using more gas. Second of all, you'll wear out your brakes faster.

However, I hope this is just one of MANY factors you're basing your decision on. My family moved to a rural community after living in the big city of Los Angeles for so many years. Its a tricky adjustment and its a long process just to get adjusted.

Stop and go driving is by far worse for your car. The car is made to run constantly, not stop every twenty meters. If you are going to drive the highway, use the manual transmission car, you can come to a complete stop without using your brakes, and they burn less gas too.

WOW, there are some very well informed ladies answering here today. They are right, stop and go is harder on automatic transmissions too. All the constant shifting causes them to run hotter and wear faster.

stop and go traffic is much worse for your car considering all the speeding up and slowing down, which wastes gas and brakes.
