Bottom line is that he will be hurt in the process no matter how you do it. You must just let him down as easily as possible and hope for the best. Let him know that you still want to be his friend and that you just don't want the relationship anymore. Once you have broken the news, give him some space. Then after he has had some alone time, make sure that you call and ask him if he wants to hang out. Just be sure to make a clean cut distinction that there will be no sex. Good luck.

No matter how much you try not to hurt him, he will be, but the best thing is to be honest. Being friends afterwards is hard, because someone is always hoping that it will go back to the way it was.
