Porque La Vida Es Así

José: ¿Quién ganó la beca?
Andrea: Merecedes la ganó
José: ¡Mercedes no la merece!
Andrea: Así es la vida.

(That's life for ya. That's what life is like. Because life's like that)

It all depends on context and there are different ways to say it. The basic meaning is, "That's what life's like." or, "Because life is like that." or "This is life."

The literal translation can sometimes be misleading.
