In the grocery store (meat section) they sell Large marrow bones
make sure you boil them for about 15 minutes then cool them completely. Your dog will litterally spend hours on that bone, and they don't splinter,, You may want to replace it after a couple of months or just give him a new one to knaw on.
My two labs love them.
Stay away from rawhide, it does splinter and it's not very good for their digestive system.

rawhide is not that good for dogs. Marrow bones are good for the teeth and can be bought in almost grocery store. Give them frozen. The dog will lick and chew the bone for awhile. Rawhide is ok once and a while but you wouldn't give your kids twinkies everyday. Filling a kong with dry food and peanut butter and freezing it will be a great treat. Everything in moderation. mike

I have been living and have a pet business plus have had the pleasure of having 11 dogs I used to give my dogs rawhide however i now believe it is unsafe big belly dogs that eat fast drink lots of water can develop bloat (stomach turns twists and mostly death occurs) undigested rawhide and meat bones are not worth losing a dog. Carrots raw if you start them young they will most likely enjoy this treat much safer...

We were tired of the rawhides and the uncertainty of how they affect a dogs stomach and digestion so we switched to BULLY STICKS. The are a bit more expensive than regualr rawhides, but our American Bulldog loves them. You can find them at pet stores or bullysticksonline.com or bullysticks.com and other places. I would highly recommend trying these atleast once. For a large breed, go with the 9-12" and regular to jumbo.

I don't really care for rawhide bones. Beef knuckle bones are a good alternative for a German Shepherd. He really does not need a lot of bones. You can give him something like a Kong or a tirebiter.

RAW meaty bones are perfectly safe. Cooked or smoked bones splinter easily and should not be given. Rawhide as well as pig ears is not digestible and is chemically treated so you don't want to feed that either. Kong and Nylabone make good hard chew toys. Anything you give your dog should be given under supervision.

Type of bones to avoid: any foul, like turkey, chicken, ect. splinter and will potentially choke a dog.
Beef bones are best...but venison, and pork are OK, as well.
Rawhide is safe, its just not digestible--only chewable. Some dogs have issues with it, while others don't...digestive problems with rawhide varies dog to dog...it isn't relative to the breed, so much.

I never give rawhide to my dogs. Only natural bones and the occasional doggy biscuit. Rawhide is very hard to digest and everyone of my dogs just gobble it down and get sick.

Just make sure you never give your dog cooked bones---they get splintery after they've been cooked and can seriously injure your dog. And if you're going to give him rawhide, don't leave him alone while he chews it. Keep your eye on him to make sure he doesn't have any trouble with it. Rawhide has quite a lot of calorie content, so use it only as an occasional treat.

hi, i get bones from my butchers,if you go up to your local butcher and ask for left over bones. If you think that dogs killed and ate whole live animals before we people fed them out of tins this is a great natural way to feed them.Raw bones, knuckes etc from the butcher are great. My german shepard eats every bit of the bone and loves them.So definately raw bones are best.
