The lack of MUTUAL respect would lead to anarchy in the military hierarchial system. Without respect proceeding downwards from the leadership, the troops would rapidly become demoralized. Without respect going UP the chain of command, a leader would be forced to constantly run shop by brute methods rather than through dynamic leader/follower rolls.

Respect is also a fundamental aspect of the US Military. Each soldier, sailor, airman, and marine is a representative of their respective branch to their neighborhood and country. If that military member refuses to bear themselves with proper discipline (bearing) and respect then they paint a bad picture to society as to what it means to be in the military. Because, as troops, we serve our civilian society, this represents a great injustice against those whom we have pledged to defend since it takes away the secure and comforting image of the disciplined and effective US Military Member as a respectful and respectable member of the community.
