i get home late in the evenings so i still want to work out and make dinner. Is it better to eat before i work out or after?

Yes...in this situation, eating after workout would be better.... You can work harder on an empty stomach, and because of the metabolism boost from execs, you will actually burn the calories from dinner faster after you have worked out. Maybe a light snack before the workout, an apple or something...but otherwise wait to eat until you have finished.

As I was advised by trainer at gym, eat a small snack before exercising (energy bar or I eat a piece of cheese or granola bar - to curb any hunger after working all day) and then eat a meal after exercise. Exercise increases your metabolism and eating the meal afterwards will promote digestion and weight maintenance or loss. Also probably not a good idea to eat a full meal/have full stomach and engage in strenuous activity. Most trainers for aerobics/spinning classes stress having water bottle nearby and continually hydrating during class. This approach has worked well for me for 10+ years.

It depends on *your* body needs!

If you are an ectomorph (even an overweight one) you can go without eating before the exercise because you have starch stored in your endurance muscles and can burn those (weight lifting) or fats (running). It's however important that you eat proteins after exercise if by exercise you mean weight lifting.

If you are a mesomorph/endomorph, you probably will need some light starchy snack before exercising. And you will still need the proteins after weight lifting.

You should eat something small about 30 minutes before, go work out , then eat something about an hour after.

I recently read about this but the article was talking about running for exercise. It said eat after because your metabolism is still going full speed even after you stop the running.

Before because you burn the calories when exercising. But it doesnt make much of a difference if you eat afterward.

After... u will get cramps if u eat before. If ur really hungry tho just eat something lite about half an hour prior

Eat after exercise. but a light snack should be good before exercise.

Eat after to build muscle.
