My grandfather would melt vanilla ice cream and mix it with egg............dipping the bread in that and frying it. It was SO good.

Not to soak the egg mixture into the bread too much, and to cook them with a lid on the stove top slowly, thus giving it time to rise a bit, then turn the heat up and brown it.. Some cooking show just had a special about it, think it was Alton Brown on Food Network. I watch too many cooking shows, I can't remember who had what! Except if the recipe is so spicey it burns it is probably Yummo"s recipe, and if it has cream and or butter, it's the Lady's.
Go to Food Network . com. they have 340 recipes listed under "French toast."

Slice the bread the night before you plan to make the French Toast. Letting it get a bit dry & stale before dipping in the egg/milk mixture seems to really help the texture & flavor

Use a nice hearty bread, not wonderbread-type stuff.
Soak it well in the egg-milk-vanilla-cinnamon mix.
For an absolutely awesome taste, fry up some bacon first, then cook the french toast using a bit of the bacon grease instead of whatever other oil you would have used.

Instead of milk, use half and half. Also, use very thick bread (I like buying a loaf of Italian bread from the Kroger bakery). Let it soak in your cream/egg/seasoning mixture until both sides are thoroughly saturated (but not to the point of being soggy and falling apart) then let it drain on a wire rack for a few minutes. Fry in *butter*, not oil, margarine or Pam (spray).

as the others have said, egg, milk, pinch of nutmeg/cinnamon, but add a dash of vanilla essence too- yummy! And while it's still hot after frying drizle on syrup (if u like syrup on your french toast)- it melts and soaks into the bread- too dicine!!don't be stingey with the syrup or t won't 'goo' when you bite it :)

the secret is to use a really delicious and hearty bread and to let it soak in the egg mixture until it absorbs enough....also put a little cinnamon into the egg mix as well as a pinch of salt....

pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon powder in the egg-milk mixture, sufficient time for absorption, not worth rushing this step, fry on medium heat till golden brown, this way it is crisp on the outside but moist inside..Top with a little cream if it's a day when you couldn't care less.
