Yes, and you don't need any special software to do it either as you can do it in Windows all at once simply by using Windows Explorer (the thing that opens up when you click on "My Computer" or "My Documents" or whatever).
First, you do what you said; select multiple files by holding down control and selecting them one by one (or using shift and clicking on the first file, then the last file, so that it selects all files included between). Once you have done this, simply press F2 on your keybooard and rename them like so:
F2---> rename one of them (eg. Wedding) ---> Press "Enter" (or "Return", depending on what your keyboard calls it) ---> Windows will do the rest for you.
It adds a number on the end of each file in parenthesis (eg. (1), (2), (3) so that they are all named uniquely.
Edit: It's notable that this will work for ANY TYPE of file (.txt, .jpg, .gif, .psd, et cetera).

Yes, select all the files that you wish to rename, then right-click and select rename. One file will have the cursor brought up, just enter the name you wish to use and then hit enter. All the files will be renamed "NAME (x)" where x is a number 1 to N files.

Yes, choose a thumbnail veiw. Highlight them all, right click on the first one when they are all still highlighted, click rename, type in your new name eg, holiday, and then press ok.
Then it will rename them all holiday, holiday(1), holiday(2) etc. Hope that helps.
