I deliver a newpaper route. I travel 7 miles to a pickup point where I start the route. I travel about the same distance home after I deliver the last paper. Can I deduct the total miles from when I leave home until I return, or only the miles from the pickup point to the last delivery?

None. A lot of them are deductible, though.

How do you deliver a newspaper route? Why don't you just deliver newspapers instead?

All are deductible except for the commuting miles. But if you have two jobs, the mileage from one job to the other is deductible. This does not apply if you go home first. So if you need a change of clothes, take them with you to your first job. Ask your tax preparer which route would be better, either the standard mileage rate which includes allowances for fuel, oil, etc. or the actual which you will need to have documentation of. Well in all cases you need documentation. IRS can audit a 2006 return in 2009 if it so chooses.

The commuting miles are not deductible. The miles you drive from the pickup point to the last delivery are deductible. If you take the mileage rate, it's currently 44.5 cents per mile.
