I often heard that in a closed underground water-tank(or reservoir), if someone light a fire or switch on an electric bulb the gas causes explosion. I want to know: What is the name of that gas & what is the chemical reaction behind it? Please try to explain me elaborately.. I am waiting for ur answer.

Is methane. A natural gas also found from decaying matters and it burns easily. This is how we get light energy. The reason why it is a combustible gas is due to the fact that, it reacts with oxygen to emit heat and light energy. Is the same as the oxyacetylene. Another gas that mix with oxygen to produce a very hot white flame when burning. There are many chemical names; namely, methanol, methyalcohol, methylated spirits. As for electric bulb, the inactive gas within the bulb filament is argon. I guess the chemical reaction of combustion is more or less the same principle..

Anerobic organisms degrade the organic materials that may be in the water. If there is a headspace in a tank, it could be a potential exposive atmosphere as methane is produced. You can also have hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide as a by product. This is why you should always vent a tank before entering it.
