Reality....8 to 10 or 12 hours a day. Now me...I'm old...on staff...and desk bound. The young pups...8 to 16 hours a day on the streets. I put many hours in as a young copper. But...*sigh*...it's a young person's job and its very easy in and around your career to begin to experience burn-out. I'm at the stage where even though I can retire if I can squeeze out 3 more lousy years to max my pension than I can finally bail. Believe me...dealing with the general public after all this time is not what I plan to do upon retirement. Actually..I want to live in the back woods of Florida..wear a loin cloth, grow my hair long and shun society except for a trip to the grocery store...loin cloth being left at home of course.

As an officer of the law you are required to serve and protect 24/7. It's not one of those jobs where once you clock out, and remove your uniform you can stop worrying about what others need or doing. If while on your day off you witness a crime happening or a bystander needs your help, you can't say "I'm not on duty." You chose this career you are on duty everyday, all day.

shifts vary by department, I have worked 8 to 12 normal shifts.
and had on many occassions to work double shifts if there were officers out. ( remember a police officer can't just go home, he has to be "relieved" by his supervisor, and if there are not enough officers comming on duty on the next shift, some officers are required to stay another shift.

Right after 911 we did almost 4 days straight with only a few "naps" when we could sneak them.

I usually work 8-12 hr days depending if we are in the middle of a call when our shift is up. Also if we are short handed we have to cover each other. Sometimes we have to pull a double.
