Bought a Vista , wasted $100.00, went back to XP.
Vista has a nice interface, but very slow!! My computer is not that slow: P4 775 Pentium D (dual core) 3.4 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 2X500GB SATA, 512 MB nVidia video, but still runs Vista so SLOW compared to XP.
Advise is stay away from Vista, until they figure out how to speed up the system (I disabled a lot of services running on the background, but still slow than XP).Installed Vista Manager, and all kind of tweaks, but still slow especially when playing DVD, performance is not up to par with XP. Stay with what works, and do more on your computer regardless of what operating systems it is. Computer is about using them, not how nice they look.
You can customize XP to look like Vista with Vista Transformation pack, Window Blind, DesktopX and even a sidebar if you like Vista (my friends can't tell I'm running XP). I call it Windows XP Vista Edition!!
Best of luck...

Vista is more recent, has an aspect bar, lot extra safe practices which could rigidity you nuts, the computer seems a touch extra appropriate. the position as Windown XP is a touch older yet truly some human beings favor to apply it because it really is nicely acceptable with all classes (maximum) , while Vista will be very annoying and not at all understand gadgets or softwares, etc etc. also XP calls for 512 mb of ram and vista needs atleast a million gb. i'm no computer freak. =]

I have 2 pcs with XP right now. My newer computer came with a rebate offer for a free copy of Vista to send in for when it came out. Honestly I don't even want to mess with Vista because I have heard several complaints from friends and have seen negative reactions on message boards about it. I have had XP systems for years and have never had issues with it. I guess I'll keep the Vista disk around and either give it to a friend or hang on to it until the bugs get worked out of Vista. I'd rather let the pros out there find all the problems with it first. Some people who have Vista-ready systems buy the new program and it won't load on their machine properly. I don't have the time or patience for that.

I would wait at least 4 months or so before getting it because I think software makers do not have software that can be used on their platform I won't get Vista until I get a new computer because I think XP is just fine for my needs right now, but I think Vista is just copying Macintosh (like Windows always seems to do, rolls eyes).

I bought a new PC recently, avoided Vista cos everyone around me is complaining of many driver conflict issues, some of them are vista user while others have heard tons of stories about avoiding the using of vista for now.

I have a desktop with XP and a notebook with Vista. I did a big mistake of buying the notebook! Ever see the "cancel or allow" commercial? IT'S EXACTLY LIKE THAT!!! Too many bugs on this system. I should have went with my gut and bought the XP notebook. (infact, I think I will return it today!)

I wouldn't buy a new copy of windows until I get it with a new computer. When it comes with computer, it's a better deal. To buy the program when you already have a version of windows would be foolish.
